Meal prep fails for most people not because the recipes are hard, but because the habits around it are missing. Here are five that actually make weeknight cooking easier โ no all-day Sunday prep marathon required.
1. Pick 3 Meals, Not 7
Trying to plan every dinner for the week is exhausting and usually falls apart by Wednesday. Instead, prep 3 solid meals and repeat them across the week, or mix with quick backups. Less planning, less waste, more likely to actually happen.
2. Batch-Cook One Protein, Not One Whole Meal
Cook a big batch of chicken, ground turkey, or beans once โ then build different meals around it through the week (tacos one night, a salad the next, a stir-fry after that). More variety with less repeated cooking.
3. Pre-Wash and Chop Produce Immediately
The moment groceries come home, wash and chop vegetables before they go in the fridge. Future-you is far more likely to actually cook when the annoying prep step is already done.

4. Keep 2-3 "No Real Cooking" Backups
Some nights, prepped meals still won't happen. Keep a couple of true backups on hand โ like a rotisserie chicken plus bagged salad, or eggs and toast โ so the backup isn't takeout by default.
5. Prep Ingredients, Not Just Finished Meals
Instead of cooking 5 identical containers, prep components โ cooked grains, chopped veggies, a sauce โ and assemble different combinations through the week. Less boring than eating the same exact meal 5 days straight, and just as fast.
The goal isn't a perfect system โ it's removing just enough friction that cooking on a Tuesday night actually feels doable.
